Real Time Estimation of Combustion Indicators on a 4-Cylinder CI Turbocharged Engine Based on Instantaneous Engine Speed Measurement with Rapid Prototyping Implementation

Abstract In the field of Internal Combustion Engines (ICEs), increasingly stricter regulations on pollutant emissions have made necessary to continuously monitor engine operation. Indeed, in order tackle fault-induced variations performance, continuous, real-time data related engine’s thermodynamic cycle is needed: specifically, obtaining detailed information combustion phase paramount. indicators are calculated through in-cylinder pressure, for which both direct and indirect measurement techniques can be employed. The former accurate, but suffer from limited durability, while latter less durable expensive, therefore more attractive mass production applications. A technique reconstructing pressure each cylinder, combination instantaneous crankshaft speed signal a 0D model, was developed by authors MATLAB-Simulink environment validated against experimental data. objective present study implement this model four-cylinders CI turbocharged engine. Specifically, since focus put assessing capability, efforts were execute inside controller. paper presents results campaign that carried out validate model. signals pickup wheel camshaft sensor represent main inputs, as they allow calculation detection cylinder Firing Top Dead Center (FTDC), respectively. Pressure sensors mounted all cylinders acquisition.
